Random draining of Battery

Am sad my 2010 TDV8 was taken away on flatbed to dealers. They are trying to find reason for random draining of battery. Happens about every two months, car is locked, left overnight, come back in morning and lights are flashing, things going beep/whirr, and battery voltage going down down down. Lowest we have seen is 2 Volts. New batteries gone in, upper tailgate switch checked. car checked and goes to "sleep" correctly. LR dealer can't seem to find a fault. Issue is, as soon as car is started, voltage returns to normal, fault codes clear, all appears ok. Until next time...... Confused Suggestions?? The dealer is also at a loss. SWMBO owns this car I get to drive occasionally Smile

air suspension fault, system wakes up every few hours and tries to adjust what it thinks is a lean in the suspension, using precious power

i concur, my mercedes e320 avantgarde had air suspension, they had to recall them to stop the suspension righting itself all the time, in theory it shoudnt happen, as the car is parked and stationary, however take your mercedes on a P & O ferry, lock it and see what happens. The suspension activates all the time due to the ferrys movement, and then it wont start, as the battery drains. 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater Smile)))

Possible. Where the car is left parked is not level, so that could be it. I haven't heard it trying to adjust, but when am asleep, don't here much! SWMBO owns this car I get to drive occasionally Smile

perhaps it waking up is enough? depending on frequency/sensor readings etc, coupled with weak battery - might be enough to drain it?

just guessing Thumbs Up ============

Sounds like me...just waking up is enough! Very Happy Though waking up to working car always puts a smile on my face. Lucky I am at work at moment so dealer has plenty of time for testing/trials. Will see what they come back with. SWMBO owns this car I get to drive occasionally Smile

Meccles u mentioned in your first post of getting a new battery fitted and checking the upper tailgate why did u check the upper tailgate? Reason I'm asking is the other day I noticed my upper tailgate won't unlock and today my battery is totally flat car wouldn't start, is there a link between flat batts and the tailgate? Java black 2006

There is heaps of rlinks/reference on this forum to a known issue with the upper taikgate switch failing, which causea a short, which drains the battery down. I think particularly in UK (salted roads perhaps?). You can buy new switches on ebay. SWMBO owns this car I get to drive occasionally Smile

Update, looks like it may have been a faulty bonnet switch. Same type of issue as upper tailgate just opposite end of car. SWMBO owns this car I get to drive occasionally Smile

Car failed again, Was at dealer for week while they tried to get it to fail/drain battery. New battery fitted, new software loaded, new bonnet switch. Worked fine for 6 weeks. Then fails to start in morning, battery dead flat. Sad What to say? SWMBO owns this car I get to drive occasionally Smile

I wonder if the alternator (generator) is starting to fail leading to a steadily draining battery. Just a thought. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I will hit the dealer up to fit a new upper tailgate switch. Have asked them already about the alternator, they confirmed that there had been some failures on earlier TDV8 (2007-2009) but that as yet they had not seen a 2010 spec alternator fail. Not that this is impossible I mean this is a Land Rover! Car just finished a bit of off roading and got really dirty/dusty, and had good clean. The upper tailgate was physically full of dust, so maybe this is related, washing all dirt out? Could be, wet/faulty switch. Can you waterproof the switch at all? Or just glue the upper tailgate down and remove switch altogether Laughing that would fix it! SWMBO owns this car I get to drive occasionally Smile
